CHAPTER 1

For five years I've seen these two dance around each other. In all that time I have come to one conclusion, adults are weird. I don't get it. I may only be twelve, but I know what I'm seeing. The thing I don't get is when it changes. I mean if a boy likes me, he either picks on me or pulls my hair and runs away. When does it go from that to staring at each other when the other isn't looking.

---

The first time I met Sara, she had just recently started, so I can understand why she wasn't mingling much. I noticed that she would occasionally look over at my mom when she was talking or dancing. From what uncle Greg told me, they didn't get along real well. I ended up hanging out with Greg in the break room playing video games until we left.

When mom was getting me ready for bed I mentioned that I thought Sara was neat. She just brushed it off with an uh-huh. I know that her and daddy aren't getting back together. I gave up that thought the first time I saw him slap her. I heard him once accuse her of sleeping with uncle Gil, but even I know Mom would never do that. I mean he keeps spiders as pets, could that be more ugh.

The next couple years, I only saw Sara a handful of times, but I did start to notice that Mom was now staring at Sara too. I know that sometimes moms have girlfriends instead of boyfriends because I have a couple friends that just have two moms. The way I see it, it doesn't matter who you love just as long as you are happy.

Then, it happened. I was devastated when I found out Daddy was dead. Mom let me know that uncle Gil put Sara on the case. I knew then that she would stop at nothing to put the bad guys away for what they did. The day Mom was taking care of Daddy's arrangements, Sara sat with me and explained what happened in his case. That was the first time I saw Sara cry, I just gave her a hug telling her it was okay knowing she did her best. Before I left, Sara gave me her numbers to call her anytime because she said we had alot in common.

The next couple of months were rough. Mom and I were fighting constantly because I was getting in trouble at school. Some of the kids were teasing me about my dad, and I retaliated by getting into fights. The day I got suspended, I honestly thought Mom was going to kill me. She grounded me for a month to my room. I thought about calling Sara then, but decided not to because from the latest I had overheard, Mom was angry with Sara, again.

The first time I called Sara was after the lab explosion. Mom said she had been hurt, but not as bad as Greg. Before we started, she made sure that Mom knew that we were talking. We discussed my continous acting up, and she explained that Mom was having a tough time too, and I should cut her some slack. She made me promise that I would be better to ease up on causing Mom unwanted stress.

After that, Sara and I talked on a weekly basis, maybe more depending if I needed any homework help. Mom didn't seem to mind. If anything, she was happier because I was staying out of trouble. Everything was going great until it happened. I don't know why, but Mom got a promotion, and the team got split up. The worse part was I very rarely got to see Mom. Sara made me feel a little better by telling me that it was an adjustment for Mom too and give it time to sort itself out.

Then one day, Mom came home telling me that I was not allowed to speak to Sara anymore. She never gave me a reason, and I ended up falling back into bad habits because she was never home, and I didn't have anyone to talk about my problems to. Then I did something extremely stupid looking back on it. I decided to hitchhike to Grandpa Sam's, but I got caught by the police and handed over to Mom.

What she did next still freaks me out. She took me to the morgue and showed me a woman who was killed hitchhiking. I freaked out and ran. I was running down the hall when Sara stopped me. She took me to this out of the way lab as I gave her the rundown of what has been happening, and she agreed with Mom about how wrong it was what I did.

I must have fallen asleep after we were done talking because I woke up in my bed with Mom watching over me. The first thing I did was hug her and apologize for my behavior. We spent the next hour talking about everything. I think that was the day Mom started seeing Sara in a different light.

Things got even better than they were before that weasel, Mom and Sara's description of Ecklie, split up the team. I ended up convincing Mom that we should invite Sara over for dinner on a weekly basis. Sara tried to back out at first, but I pulled out my sad puppy dog look.

And of course when things were going along smoothly, all hell breaks loose, again. Apparently, some nutball kidnapped Nick and was holding him hostage. I had to spend the whole time with Aunt Nancy except when she had to drop me off at the lab because she got called into work.

Although, it wasn't all bad. I got to spend some time with Sara. While we were talking, I could sense that Sara was close to losing it, so I used her own advice against her which ended up causing her to cry. Mom stepped in while I was hugging Sara, but I waved her off knowing how private Sara was about her feelings.

After they found Nick, the whole team got three days off. I suggested to Mom that we should do something with Sara, so she wouldn't be alone. We ended up going to the zoo, and that is when I decided to give them a little push. When we got inside, I had Sara carry me around piggyback while her and Mom held hands, so we wouldn't get separated. I thought things were going great until we got home. Mom and Sara ended up sitting on opposite sides of the couch when I decided to just kick them both in the butt.

"That's it! I may get grounded for this, but I don't care. You both are the blindest and dumbest people I know. I mean you solve scientific puzzles on a nightly basis, but can't see what is right in front of you. I have seen the way you both look at each other when the other isn't looking. Now, I'm sending myself to my room while you two get your heads out of your butts and figure it out," I said turning around and heading for the stairs, but before I started up, I peeked around the corner to see Mom sitting on Sara's lap kising her. Like I said before, adults are weird.

CHAPTER 2

When I got upstairs, I decided to check on my emails. I had a couple from my best friend Sasha.  She is great, but I swear sometimes I think she gets into the sugar. Although, I'm sure if you ask Mom, she would say the same thing about me. I guess I should email her back and tell her what I did to Mom and Sara.

We were IMing back and forth about school, and the new girl I knew she liked until she told me that her mom was calling her for dinner. As I was checking to see if any more of my friends were on, someone knocked on my door. I signed off and went to check the door. I opened it to find Mom smiling at me telling me dinner was ready.

I was going to ask about Sara, but figured that if she wanted me to know, she would tell me. As we were coming down the steps, the smells coming from downstairs were mouth watering. I guess hooking Mom up with Sara has another benefit, home-cooked meals. I swear Mom and I were like the 'Gilmore girls' always eating out or ordering in.

I almost lost it when I saw Sara in Mom's apron. It was her 'Cooking makes you good lookin' one. I don't know where Mom bought it, but like I said before, adults are weird. When I sat down, I noticed Sara had made two different dinners. One was a small batch of meat lasagne for me while she made a bigger batch of vegetable lasagne for her and Mom. I'll probably try some of theirs because Mom taught me that I can't call something gross until I've tried it.

We spent dinner talking about what has been going on at school and a little about their work. I know everything is still a little touchy even though uncle Nick is okay. As much as I want to do know about their relationship, I realize it is just that, their relationship. I'm sure they'll let me know sooner or later.

After dinner, I told Mom that I would do the dishes. She of course checked my forehead to make sure I was feeling okay. I figure with the goofy faces they were making throughout dinner, they could use some more time to themselves. I know I just got them together, but this is the first time in a long while that I've seen Mom really happy.

"Hey Linds, Sara wants to know if you want to watch a movie with us," Mom asked as I was finishing the dishes.

"I think that would be fun, but can we do our usual?" I asked smiling.

"Sure, but Sara has to be in it too," Mom answered as I smiled walking over and taking her hand as we went into the living room.

We showed Sara how Mom and I watched movies together, and she sat on the end with one leg stretched out on the couch and one on the floor, and Mom did the same except that she laid her head on Sara's chest. After putting in 'You've got Mail', I curled into Mom's lap as she wrapped her arms around me.

When I woke up in the morning, I found myself in bed. I know I didn't do this, so Mom must have carried me up after Sara left. I took my morning shower, and since I didn't hear Mom up, I guess I'm feeding myself this morning.

I headed downstairs after getting dressed. I know I'm not allowed, but I figure since Mom is asleep, I can eat my cereal and watch cartoons without her ever finding out. I just have to make sure not to make a mess. I would normally have juice too, but I'd rather not press my luck.

Halfway through my bowl, I heard Mom coming down the steps, and I know I'm busted, so I just continue eating while watching a classic Scooby-Doo which according to what Sara has told me is the best cartoon ever. I closed mt eyes when I heard Mom hit the bottom step.

"Boy, are you lucky. If I was your Mom, you would be in so much trouble. You can thank your lucky stars that it was me that came down the steps," Sara said as I opened my eyes shocked to see that Sara had spent the night. She started laughing as all I could do was stare at her with my mouth open.

I watched her walk into the kitchen still laughing at me. Okay lets go through this, this is my doing, but I didn't expect Sara to stay. Although, we have all become closer lately so it isn't all that surprising. I scarfed down the rest of my cereal before heading into the kitchen to see what Sara is up to.

"Sara, I'm glad you stayed. It was a bit of a shock that you slept with Mom. Although, I think you're too good for her though," I said knowing Mom came into the kitchen from the look in Sara's eyes.

"Lindsay Anne Willows!" Mom yelled as I pulled Sara in front of me to protect me.

I know not my best plan, but I figure Mom won't do anything drastic in front of her girlfriend or at least I hope not. I look around Sara to see Mom smiling at me. I can't believe I fell for that, but then again, this might be payback for yesterday as I walked over to Mom and gave her a hug.

I took Mom's hand and led her to the living room. I sat us down on the couch and told Mom that I was okay with Sara staying over. Mom gave me a kiss on the forehead whispering in my ear that her and Sara were taking me shopping to find a thank you gift. Okay, I revise my earlier claim. Adults are weird except for Mom and Sara.
