CHAPTER 1

It has been almost three weeks since I've been in the lab. I was planning on working through Eddie's death, but after the funeral, Lindsay wanted to get out of Vegas for awhile. Sam ended up letting us use his cabin, and it was nice just me and Lindsay hanging out together. I knew she was taking things too well, and after two days at the cabin, she finally let go.

We spent a couple weeks there before heading home. She knew I needed to get back to work, but I told her that she could at any time even if it was just to talk. I just hope the guys don't coddle me. All I need to do is get back into the swing of things as I slowly made my way in passing smiling faces.

I stopped in my office to drop off my purse before heading to the break room. I clipped my cell to my belt as I closed the door. When I walked into the room, it was like I never left. Nick and Warrick were on the Playstation. I guess Sara is probably with Grissom. The boys didn't even notice me cross the room as I went for coffee.

I think I probably could have left without them seeing me except that my phone ringing drew their attention to me. It was Linds, she was calling just to tell me that she was going to bed. She also asked if I was taking her to school in the morning. I told her that I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I had just turned around from hanging up and was enveloped into hugs by both of them. We broke apart when Gil came in with Sofia from days. The guys aren't surprised to see her, so I guess I'll find out soon enough what is going on.

After pairing me up with Nick on a B & E, Grissom headed out with Sofia not saying anything to me. Warrick gave me another hug before he left telling me he'll explain after shift. Nick and I drove to our scene in complete silence. I'm sure he knows what the situation is, but probably won't tell me unless I ask.

I started processing the scene while Nick was getting the details from Detective Vega. I was dusting the door that was jimmied open when Nick came over and gave me the particulars. He went to start on the interior while I continued with the door. From the vibes I'm starting to get, I have a feeling this is going to be the shift from hell.

After collecting the evidence, we headed back to the lab which again was completely quiet. If this wasn't my first day back, I would make Nick explain the weirdness that has been this shift. I just hope what Warrick has to say sheds some light on things.

We split up the chores when we dropped the evidence off in the layout room. Nick took DNA and the prelim with Gil while I took the print lifts and the trace evidence. Thankfully, Hodges wasn't any different when I dropped off stuff for him. I headed off to the print lab, and thankfully, it was empty, so I could run the lifts myself.

The first few I ran were family members, but I came up with a name, and he had a record. I called Vega with the info and told him to page Nick when they grabbed him up. I'm not really up for an interrogation my first day back. I ended up getting a cup of coffee before heading back to the layout room.

Greg was leaving as I was coming in, but didn't even acknowledge I was there. I let it go figuring maybe he didn't see me. Hodges paged me on my way back to the layout room. I was about to page Nick with what Hodges found, but he paged me first.

Apparently, our suspect isn't all that bright. When the cops pulled him over, they found everything in the trunk of his car. Nick double checked to make sure I didn't want to sit in on the interrogation. I just ended up straightening up my office until the end of shift.

After doing some minor cleaning, I got a text from Warrick asking where I was. He came in with two cups of coffee as we sat down on the couch. I've known Warrick long enough to know that the look in his eyes isn't a good one. I ended up pacing while I figured out what my first question should be.

"Okay Warrick, I figured tonight was going to be everyone walking on eggshells around me, but instead with the exception of you and Nick, I have been pretty well ignored, and why exactly is Sofia Curtis from days working on the graveyard shift?" I asked sitting down in a chair in front of Warrick.

"Well, the simple answer to all your questions is Sara. Sofia is filling in for Sara, who is on leave. Gil and Greg are a little standoffish with you because Sara hasn't been the same since she closed Eddie's case. I don't think they are blaming you given the circumstances, but they do believe that you are the only one who can fix it," Warrick explained.

"Fix what?"

"Sara,"

"Why, what is wrong with her?"

"That is the thing, we don't know,"

CHAPTER 2

I started crying as Warrick explained how Sara started to pull away from everyone, and even her work started to suffer until Grissom made her take some personal time. Apparently, she has been cancelling her time with Greg too, all but cutting herself off from everything.

The ride home was spent with me going over everything I said to Sara during Eddie's case. It's no wonder she finally broke. I pretty much destroyed her belief in her abiliites as a CSI. I know if it would have been one of the guys, they would have taken it as someone grieving, but Sara is different. She doesn't have anything outside the lab or at least not to my knowledge which is of course my fault.

I decided on a quick shower when I got home to clear my head, so Lindsay wouldn't notice that I was worrying about something. I knew I couldn't just go over to Sara's place without figuring what I was going to do or say when I was brought out of my internal discussion by the front door opening.

Lindsay ran in and gave me a hug before going upstairs to grab her stuff. Nancy just offered me a smile before she left. I don't know if she read me, but I think I might stop by after dropping off Lindsay for a little big sister advice as Lindsay came down the steps, and we headed off to school.

Thankfully, the talking on the way to school was in reference to what she, Nanc, and Jeremy did last night, and not about my first night back because she would have asked about Sara. Now that is the one thing I've missed, Sara with Lindsay, not good with kids my ass.

As I pulled into Nancy's driveway, I didn't really know what I was going to tell her. I guess I'll explain the situation and see what she thinks I should do. When she opened her door, she handed me a cup of coffee. I guess she was expecting me. We ended up sitting in the couch as I started to explain.

"Okay sis, I know we haven't done this in a while, but I could seriously use some big sister advice. I found out something at work last night about Sara," as I went to explain the whole situation.

"Damn Cath, I know you were grieving, but Sara isn't like anyone I have ever met. She is the most dedicated person I've ever seen. She may give you that strong exterior, but I'm thinking behind that is a scared woman. You may not be able to fix this with just an apology," Nancy said as she wrapped me up in a hug as I started to cry.

I must have fallen asleep sometime seeing as though Nancy is waking me up and handing me another cup of coffee. After taking my first sip, I smelled food and followed Nancy into the kitchen where she handed a plate. She didn't saying anything during the meal which is probably good seeing that I some thinking to do.

Nancy gave me a hug before I left whispering to me that everything was going to be okay. Yeah, once I figure out what to do. I was glad I wasn't too early picking up Lindsay because that would have left me time to worry about Sara. The doors burst open shortly after the bell rang, but Lindsay wasn't one of the first ones out.

When Lindsay came out, she gave me a smile that I saw right through. This is perfect, now I have to figure out what is wrong with her while trying to formulate a plan for fixing Sara. I just hope Lindsay's situation is easier. That way, I can figure out how to get Sara back in lab.

The ride home made me flashback to riding to the scene with Nick, Lindsay didn't say a thing. It didn't get any better once we got home either. She went straight upstairs without a word. I guess if she needs to talk, she'll let me know. Until then, I can start on the Sara situation.

I decided to stretch out in the den to relax and clear my head. As soon as I closed my eyes, it dawned on me. Why didn't I think of this first. I should have followed my own advice. I remembered when Grissom screwed up with Sara, and I told him he should fix it before she goes away.

I picked up the phone and called my favorite flower shop and ordered a plant for Sara. I had them write 'Miss you, C' on the card. I didn't want to make it too complicated, so it wouldn't put too much pressure on her or me. After I hung up, I turned around to find Lindsay standing in the doorway staring at me.

"Mom, I need to go to Sara's. I already called and checked if it was okay with her. I need some help with some of my homework," Lindsay explained as I just nodded. Okay, I guess there is no time like the present to see how much damage I have to fix.

CHAPTER 3

"Did you just need me to drop you off?" I asked checking to see if Sara mentioned me.

"Yeah but maybe when you pick me up, you can bring dinner. That way we won't have to rush home and eat before you drop me off," Lindsay explained as I tried to remember the places Sara liked to eat.

I grabbed my keys as we headed for the car, and thankfully, the ride over to Sara's was better than the ride home from school. The only difference between then and now was Sara. I guess I'll have to find out what her secret is for cheering up Lindsay. After dropping her off, I decided to head over to Nancy's to give her the small update.

While Nancy and I talked over coffee, she figured that Sara either needed time off or is hiding that she is hurt, and it is up to me to figure out which one. I left Nancy's and headed to the diner that Sara and I have gone to after shift. Until Eddie's death, I would make sure to take(drag) Sara out for breakfast, especially after hard cases.

I ended up ordering Sara a couple veggie wraps and a nice sized garden salad. And since Lindsay is in her hero phase, I ordered her the veggie burger that Sara told her was good, plus a large order of cheese fries. I decided on an egg salad sandwich and an order of onion rings. As I was leaving, the owner Betty had me say hi to Sara for her.

On the way over, I realized that there wasn't anything to worry about. I mean if Sara does have a problem with me, she won't do anything in front of Lindsay, and if everything goes well, maybe I'll stop by after dropping Lindsay off tomorrow morning. Lindsay must have been watching for me because by the time I was out of the car, she was standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips.

"It's about time Mom. I thought Sara and I were going to have to send out a search party," Lindsay said giggling as I lunged towards her.

"Yeah well, not everyone can be like you and Sara. I need a little time to decide what I want to eat," I said shutting the door.

As I came in, I quickly looked over Sara's place and noticed it has changed a little since the last time I was here. It is definitely neater, but I guess when you're on vacation, it is easier to pick up after yourself. When I came into the dining room, I saw my plant in the middle of the table. I passed Lindsay her dinner, and when I gave Sara hers, she gave me one of her classic Sidle smiles. Looks like I might be bringing breakfast by in the morning.

Dinner started off a little quiet until Lindsay told me that Sara got the plant delivered while they were doing her math homework, but Sara wouldn't tell her who it was from. I looked over at Sara who gave me a smile and a slight nod as I explained to Lindsay that I had sent it because Sara wasn't at work last night, and I missed her on my first day back.

After dinner, Lindsay had asked Sara if she could play her PS2 until we left. Sara went with her to show her where it was while I gathered up the garbage and took it to the kitchen to dump it. I saw that there were a couple pictures on the fridge door when I came in. I was looking at the one of Sara and Lindsay playing in the park when I saw Sara come in.

"Greg took that a couple months ago when you were at that seminar in Reno. I swear those two have the same maturity level which is bad for Greg since he isn't a preteen," Sara said as I smiled turning around. I saw that she was going to continue, but I held up my hand to stop her.

"Sara, I want to apologize for my actions and the things I said during Eddie's case. I know you busted your ass to get justice for me and my daughter, and I thank you for that. Your work as a CSI is second to none, I have seen the change in the way you handle cases now. You no longer take them home with you, but your drive and desire to solve them is still the same," I said awaiting Sara's reaction.

I saw that she was going to say something, but ended up breaking down. I wrapped my arms around her and led her down the hall away from Lindsay. I know she would mean well, but this isn't something Lindsay needs to know. I just want to get right with Sara, so our friendship and work can go back normal, or as normal as our dysfunctional family can be.

I brought her into the room Lindsay uses when she sleeps over. I sat with my back against the headboard holding Sara to my chest. While I was rubbing her back, I looked around the room and noticed it is eeiriely similar to the one at home. I guess Lindsay isn't real big on variation. I noticed that Sara's sobs have lessened as I looked down into her deep brown eyes and see the strongest woman I have ever met.

"Catherine, I knew what you were saying was coming from grief, but it didn't hurt any less. I also knew that I needed a break after that case which is why I put in for personal time. When I saw that the plant was from you, I knew that you were sorry and didn't mean the things you said even though deep down I did too," Sara said wiping the tears from her face.

I gave her another hug while she inquired to how my first day went. I gave her the blow by blow excluding the Greg and Grissom weirdness. I felt no reason to bring that up because it quite possibly might make things worse. Sara then excused herself to go to the bathroom while I headed to see what my daughter was up to.

I had to laugh when I found her playing football. It seems her uncles have rubbed off on her, and from the looks of her score, I'm guessing they probably don't stand a chance against her. I let her finish her game before we headed out. I didn't tell Sara that I might stop by in the morning just in case I work over, plus it keeps it a surprise when I show up.

CHAPTER 4

Last night's shift went better than the day before's, Greg and Grissom both actually talked to me. The only drawback was I had to work a scene with Sofia. I didn't realize how much I liked working with Sara until Sofia talked through the whole walkthrough, sometimes I wish I was more like Grissom and could block things out while I'm working.

I'm heading off to my sister's, so I can drop Linds off at school and then surprise Sara with some breakfast. It also would give us a chance to talk openly without worrying about Lindsay walking in which would be good in two ways. One, I can fix my friendship with Sara, and two, I won't have to put up with Sofia's constant talking at our scenes.

I walked in to find Lindsay eating cereal as Nancy handed me a cup of coffee. I kissed the top of Lindsay's head before taking a seat beside her. After Lindsay finished, I rinsed out my cup and gave Nancy a kiss on the cheek while Linds grabbed her bag before we headed out. The ride to school was quiet, but then I saw her reading, so I didn't say anything.

Lindsay hugged my neck before she got out. I drove to the donut shop and knowing Sara's love for glazed donuts, probably the sugar. I ordered two for her and a couple jellies for me along with two large coffees. On the way to Sara's, I'm hoping she is up, so I don't feel guilty for waking her up.

I notice her car in the driveway as I pull up which is one good sign knowing she is at least home, now lets hope she isn't sleeping. After making sure I had everything in one hand, I made my way to the door. I had to ring the doorbell this time since my daughter isn't here waiting giving me sarcasm. I heard a 'hold on' through the door as I waited.

"Hey Catherine, what is with the breakfast dropby?" Sara asked smiling as I took in what I was seeing. Sara was in a robe, but it was open and underneath wasn't much. Her shirt was so small that I could see the underside of her breasts and her underwear pretty much told me that she was a natural brunette as I quickly closed my eyes to focus and answer Sara's question.

"Um...Uh...I thought we could have some breakfast and talk some more without any interuptions," I stammered out, but the look on Sara's face told me that I was busted ogling her. She showed me in before excusing herself to change as I headed for the kitchen to free up my hands.

I sat down on one of her kitchen chairs and put my head between my knees to try and get my hormones under control. I mean don't get me wrong, I have been attracted to and dated women before, but seeing Sara like that sent me through the roof. I just hope I have control of myself before she comes back.

I got a couple plates out and put our donuts on them and placed those beside our coffees. I heard a door shut and hoped Sara wasn't wearing anything that gets me flustered, or we won't be getting much talking done. When she came into the kitchen, I started laughing because she had changed into a baggy sweatsuit set.

"So I guess my outfit is better than my last one?" Sara asked smirking at me.

"If I didn't know any better Miss Sidle, I'd swear you are flirting with me," I said smiling taking a drink of coffee.

"I am, and to be perfectly honest, I answered the door that way on purpose once I saw it was you through the peephole because I spent a lot of time last night thinking about our relationship," Sara stated as I sat there stunned.

I put my hand up to stop Sara in case she was going to say something else. I quickly processed everything that has happened this morning along with the way we are around each other, and it dawns on me that Sara and I act like we are in grade school. Instead of teasing and picking on each other, we piss each other off by pushing one another's buttons.

"Okay, I'm going to say this out loud to make sure it sounds the same as it does in my head. You gave me a peek earlier to see if I found you attractive. Why?" I asked still reeling from Sara's confessions as I waited to hear Sara's response.

"Catherine, I'm going to lay out what I would like, and I don't need you to answer right away. I don't make any assumptions about your sexuality, but I'm bi. I know Greg and Grissom know, and I thought you might, so I would like to know if you would like to have dinner with me sometime?" Sara asked as I felt myself getting the biggest smile on my face.

I finished the last of my donut as I put together what I wanted to say in my head. I have to be honest with myself here. I haven't dated a woman since my stripper days, but there have been women that I have found nice to look at, and for some reason, Sara has intrigued me since she first arrived.

"Sara, I would like to sleep on your queston before making my decision. After last night, I definitely need some time to figure everything out," I said yawning. Sara smiled at me as she came over and took my hand. She took me to Lindsay's room saying she would feel better if I didn't drive home, but she would wake me up in time to pick up Lindsay.

I smiled again as Sara shut the door. I ended up stripping down to my panties. Normally, I would only wear a night shirt, but seeing I don't have one, this is my sleepwear. I stretched out under the covers and heard a couple things pop as I laid my head down on the pillow.

CHAPTER 5

When I woke up and looked at the clock, I started to freak. Sara forgot to wake me up to go pickup Lindsay. As I was grabbing for my pants, I saw a note on the table. It seems Lindsay got sick at school, and Sara picked her up. I guess it was a good thing that I put the guys' names on Lindsay's pickup list.

I found the clothes that Sara had laid out for me. I guess she wants us to be twinkies since she left me a Harvard tee and a pair of Harvard sweats. I folded my other clothes before going to see where Lindsay and Sara are. What I saw from the hall entryway made me smile. Sara had Lindsay all covered up on the couch while she was reading to her.

I quietly crept my way into the kitchen so I didn't disturb either one. I poured myself a cup of coffee and stood in the doorway watching Sara take care of my little girl. Nothing against the guys but I don't think any of them would know what to do if they were in Sara's position. It was at that moment when I decided to accept Sara's dinner invitation.

I slipped back into the kitchen to see if there was anything to tie me over until dinner. When I look in Sara's fridge there were a couple things that scared me, but when I found the salad fixings, I knew I was in luck.

While I was chopping the tomatoes, I must not have heard Sara because when she touched my shoulder, I ended up nicking my finger. I let out a quiet 'shit' as I stuck my finger in my mouth. Sara sat me down grabbing her first aid from the top of the fridge. Even though I knew what was coming, it still stung like a bitch when she disinfected it. Although when she blew on the cut, it made it all worth it.

She ended up shooing me out of the kitchen to go sit with Lindsay while she made dinner. I sat on the coffee table to watch Lindsay sleep. I then looked up into the kitchen at the woman who had taken care of both of us today.

Sara knowing that Lindsay was sleeping got my attention and motioned me into the kitchen. When I got there, I was surprised to find not only a salad, but what looks like pasta primavera. Boy if Sara and I hit it off, I've struck gold. The woman can cook and take care of me and my daughter. I decided to give her my decision before starting to eat.

"Sara before we start, there is something I need to say. After this morning and seeing the way you have been taking care of Lindsay and I, I would love to go out to dinner with you, and maybe see if there is more than just a friendship here," I said as Sara wiped a tear off her cheek.

"Catherine, you have no idea how happy that makes me, but if this were to progress, we would need to have a serious talk about why some cases get to me, and why I can relate to Lindsay so well," Sara explained as I already had a good idea what growing up was like for Sara.

I just nodded as we ate in relative silence. I know we both probably have things to think about. I also knew that I would have to call Nancy and let her know what is going on. I really don't want to go into work tonight, but knowing Lindsay is in capable hands helps.

---

Again work was blaise last night except for when Greg popped into my office and thanked me for fixing things with Sara. I don't think he knows what is going on because Sara is private about her personal affairs. The only reason the rest of us know about him and her hanging out outside the lab is because Greg brags about it.

Before I headed over to Sara's, I stopped by the house and grabbed some clothes for both Lindsay and I. Even if she isn't going to school today, I'm thinking she could use a change of clothes. Plus if she still isn't feeling well, I'm not exactly going anywhere. As I rang her doorbell, I'm actually hoped for a replay of yesterday.

Sara answered the door with a smile and a cup of coffee. Although, I didn't get anything from the front, but when she turned around, I got to see the bottom of her cheeks that the shirt wasn't covering. If this is how I'll get greeted everyday, I'll move Lindsay in here on the nights I work, and Sara doesn't. When I followed her into the kitchen, I found that breakfast was ready.

"Cath, Lindsay is feeling better, but you can check on her before deciding to call her off or not. I'm going to grab a shower while you're eating, and since Lindsay is using her bed, you can have mine this morning since I know you are wanting to stay as long as Lindsay does," Sara explained as she headed down the hall.

Knowing I had some time before I had to call, I decided to eat before checking in on Lindsay. When I felt her head, she was still a little warm, so I called the school to excuse her. Sara was out of the shower by the time I was done. I told her I was going to take one too before heading to bed, and she explained that she was going to the store to pick up a few things while we were sleeping.

I'm going to have to ask Sara where she got that showerhead because it is positively orgasmic. When I walk into the bedroom, I saw that Sara had turned down the bed and left me a shirt to wear. I decided to wear panties just in case it was like Sara's shirt earlier. I'd rather not show off the goods before getting wooed first.

CHAPTER 6

I woke to a smell that I know so well, Sara. When I opened my eyes, I remembered that I slept in her bed. I didn't see any notes, so I guess I won't be surprised by anything today. I figure I'd look in on Lindsay before deciding to tease Sara myself.

I popped my head in Lindsay's room and saw that Sara set her up real nice. She must have been watching a movie on the portable DVD player because all I got was her big 'Lindsay' smile and a wave. I blew her a kiss before going to track down Sara.

When I got to the kitchen, I found a note on the fridge that told me that Greg stopped by, and Sara didn't get to the store as planned. Well, that little tidbit might make work interesting tonight if Greg saw my car. I ended up getting something to drink before heading to the couch to await Sara's reappearance.

I already had my plan set up when I heard Sara's key in the lock. I pretended to be asleep as I pulled my shirt up a little to give her a shot of my maroon thong. Before she opened the door, I decided to turn over, so I wouldn't have the urge to smile or laugh when she came in.

"Hey Greg, check out this ass," Sara said as I flipped over and covered myself, but when I looked towards the door all I saw was a laughing Sara. I gave her the finger before taking me and the blanket down the hall to put some pants on listening to her laugh the whole time.

I went against putting on the pants I brought considering I would be liable to spill something on them. I decided instead to check and see if Sara had another pair of sweats to borrow. Of course while I was looking through her dresser, I checked out her underwear drawer just to see what her preference was.

Surprisingly, we have the same kind of taste. I just figured the last two pairs were all she had. I can only guess there are more surprises to Sara that I don't know about yet. I quickly threw on a pair of navy sweats I found before I got busted checking out Sara's unmentionables.

I came back down the hall to find Sara sitting on the couch reading the paper. I snuck up behind her making sure I stayed in her blind spots, so she wouldn't see me. I ended up standing behind her not moving waiting for the perfect opportunity to scare her.

"Hey Catherine if you want some coffee, I just brewed some, and Lindsay wants to see you," Sara said not even turning around. I grumbled a thanks as I headed to Lindsay's room to see what she wanted.

I opened the door finding Lindsay smiling at me. Well, I guess that means it isn't anything bad, or at least I hope not. I sat beside her on the bed and wrapped my arm around her. I put my hand on her head finding it normal which means she'll be going to school tomorrow.

"Mom, Sara told me that you and her are going out to dinner together. I know that Sara has dated women, so I guess what I'm asking is, are you and Sara going out on a date?" Lindsay asked as I realize that Sara wanted to make sure it was okay with Lindsay first.

"Linds, right now all it is dinner, but Sara and I are going into it with the idea of something more. Are you going to be okay if Sara and I start to date?" I asked giving a kiss on the head.

I didn't get a direct answer, but what I did get was an excited eleven year old hugging me around the neck. I guess this is a yes, but I really want a verbal response just to make sure. She gave me a kiss on the cheek before sitting on my lap.

"Yes Mom, I'm okay if you end up dating Sara. Besides, it will work out for me too. She'll be around more to help with my homework, and someone to help pick on you with," she said as I tickled her a little before she ran out of the room laughing.

When I made it back to the kitchen, Lindsay was setting the table. I walked over to Sara and whispered asking if there was anything I could do. She just shook her head as I ended up taking the seat beside Lindsay. Whatever Sara was baking smelled phenomenal.

After Sara's delicious vegetable lasagna, I did the dishes while she and Lindsay planned their evening for after I leave. I'm already realizing that even before it happens tomorrow morning is going to suck because Lindsay and I will be going home.

When I left, Lindsay was curled into Sara's lap watching a movie. I stopped in my office when I got to the lab and saw there was a note from Grissom asking me to meet him in his office. Since I've already gotten Greg's, this must be Grissom thanking me for making up with Sara. When I walked in, he had me shut the door and take a seat.

"Catherine, you mind telling me why your car has been at Sara's house for the past two days?" Gil asked.

CHAPTER 7

"Honestly, I don't see where that is any of your business. What I do outside the lab, and who I do it with isn't your concern. If you really want to know bad enough, why don't you call Sara and ask her," I said getting out of the chair and leaving.

Un-fucking-believable, I mean what an asshole. Greg was happy that I fixed things with Sara, but Grissom, no. All Mr. 'I have all the bugs I own up my butt' Grissom wants to why my car is at Sara's house. Here's an idea moron, ask her yourself. I must have in my own little world until I realized that Greg yanked me into his lab.

"Care to explain why you and Lindsay were at Sara's this afternoon?" he asked with a stupid giddy smile on his face. I started to laugh and forget what Grissom had asked minutes earlier. All I did was give him a kiss on the cheek and whisper the word no into his ear as I walked out of his lab.

When I got to the breakroom, Gil still wasn't there yet. Either he is talking with Sara, or he is pouting in his office because I won't tell him what he wants to know. I poured myself a cup of coffee, and as I sat down, my pager went off. It was a text from Sara, and apparently Grissom is more pissed at me because Sara didn't tell him either. I was about to text her back when he stomped in the room.

He handed Warrick and Nick a slip and gave Sofia another while telling her something before she left. Okay, here we go again. I figure I'll be doing some paperwork tonight unless we get swamped. Hey, that is fine with me, less chance of me getting stinky, gooed, or both.

"Catherine, I'm going to keep you here to hold down the fort until something comes in. I let the techs know you're here in case they have any problems," Grissom explained as I nodded holding my tongue knowing if I were to open my mouth, I would probably get suspended.

I decided to enjoy my cup of coffee before heading back to my office. I texted Sara back asking if Lindsay got to bed okay and told her that 'Dad' grounded me for the night. We passed a couple more back and forth before she said she was going to bed. I got up and rinsed my mug out before starting my night at the lab.

---

The rest of my night went rather smoothly. I got most of my paperwork done, and I helped out a couple techs. Greg tried a couple more times to get some info. He even tried bribery, but I didn't budge. I saw Warrick and Nick a couple times, but the best part was I didn't see Gil the whole shift. Maybe by next shift he'll mellow out.

The ride over to Sara's was a little tough. It was good that Lindsay and I would get back to our normal routine, but being I wouldn't see Sara until our date, or she comes back to work whichever comes first. Although, I could just be over thinking things in my head, and everything will be fine. I guess I'll wait and see.

I don't know why, but I rang Sara's doorbell even though I have been staying here. I was a little down when she answered the door dressed, but the tight leather pants made up for it especially when she turned around. I swear to God the butt of those pants were painted on by the way they hugged her ass, plus the fact I didn't see a panty line added to the fun in my head.

Taking my eyes off Sara's ass as I came into the kitchen, I found Lindsay enjoying pancakes. Sara handed me a plate before she went down the hall. While we ate, I made sure Lindsay hadn't forgotten anything she needed for school.

Oh my goodness, these pancakes are delicious, is there anything this woman can't do? I finished washing the dishes when Sara came back out. Lindsay walked over and gave her a hug. I tossed Linds the keys telling her I would meet her in the car.

I walked over to Sara with a smile. I took her hands in mine before placing a tender kiss on her lips. I let go and was walking a way when Sara grabbed my arm turning me around. "I don't think so," was all she said before giving me a passionate kiss.

We were doing some serious kissing until a honk from outside brought us back. I leaned my head against Sara's chest to catch my breath. Before I left, I gave her another sweet kiss as I headed out the door before Lindsay came in to see what was taking me so long.

When I got to the car, I swear Lindsay had the same smile Greg had last night. Lindsay didn't say anything, so if she had any idea as to what took me so long, she wasn't saying it. We just ended up listening to the radio on the way to school.

I pulled into my driveway smiling knowing that Sara and I were on the same page with our relationship which means good dreams for me when I fall asleep. I waked into the house finding it straightened up with my mail sitting on the coffee table. I checked the phone and thankfully, there weren't any messages from Gil. Deciding not to take a shower since I didn't do anything strenuous last night, I just went to bed.

CHAPTER 8

The last couple nights of work have sucked. If Grissom wasn't ignoring me, he was giving me the shift killing cases with little or no help. THe guys have noticed it too, but were in no position to do anything, even Sofia noticed that Gil was being rough on me. Personally I don't care, I'm off tomorrow, and I'm having dinner tomorrow night with Sara, so I could care less that Grissom still has a bug up his butt.

It was good that Nancy was able to take Lindsay to school this morning because I'm dead ass tired. Mr. Crabby Pants wanted me to finish my last case before leaving. Thankfully, all I needed to do was write up the report, and I was glad he wasn't in his office when I dropped it off because he probably would have read it and found mistakes that I had to fix before I left.

When I opened my front door, I was assailed by a delicious smell. I tossed my keys on the doorside table when I noticed that there was a bouquet of flowers in a vase on the coffee table. I walked into the kitchen to find Sara cooking me breakfast. She was making me pancakes and eggs as I stood in the doorway watching her.

"Hey Cath, Nancy told me you were going to be a little late, so I thought I'd surprise you with breakfast even though our date is tonight. You have a little time, so go take a quick shower, and it should be ready when you come back down," Sara explained giving me a light kiss before shooing me out of the kitchen.

Even though it was a quick one, it was very relaxing. Probably because Sara told me where she bought her showerhead, and I went out and got one for myself. Since I was going to sleep after breakfast, I decided to go braless with panties with an overshirt that I only buttoned to my breasts. Lets see if Sara can handle teasing when she doesn't have home field advantage.

I walked back into the kitchen to find Sara had the table set, and my plate waiting for me. She was pouring herself a cup of coffee, and when she turned around, she almost choked on the sip she just took. As much as I want to relish my win, I'll do it after making sure Sara is okay.

I sat down at the table and watched as Sara would peek at me while reading the paper. On one of the bites of pancake, syrup 'accidently' dripped between my breasts, and there for a second, I thought Sara was going to come over and lick it off, but instead, I ended up wiping it off with my napkin.

"Okay Catherine, you've now eaten, so off to bed. Don't worry, I'll clean up and see myself out and sweet dreams," Sara said giving me a kiss before turning me around and smacking my butt. As I was going upstairs, I started to laugh because I remember doing the same thing to Lindsay when she was younger.

When I woke up, I heard giggling across the hallway. After getting dressed, I looked at the clock and noticed that my alarm had been shut off. I walked over to Lindsay's room to find her and Sara going over her homework. I cleared my throat to get their attention, and when Sara saw my face, she knew she had some explaining to do.

I saw her whisper something to Lindsay before kissing the side of her head. I had to smile seeing this display considering most of the people I've dated either didn't come in contact with Lindsay or just didn't acknowledge she was even there.

"Sara, I love the fact that you and Lindsay get along so well, but..." was all I got out before Sara stopped me.

"Catherine, I know where you were going with that, and yes, I should have told you that Nancy and I came up with this plan, but personally, I want a well rested Catherine on our date tonight. Now I apologize for doing this behind your back and will do anything to show you how truly sorry I am," Sara explained as I gave her a kiss, but before I let her go, I whispered to her that I would hold her to that statement.

I left her standing in my bedroom as I headed downstairs to get something to drink. I ended up sitting on the couch reading the paper when Sara and Lindsay came down. Lindsay climbed on the couch and hugged my neck and gave me a kiss on my cheek.

I gave Lindsay a kiss on the forehead as Sara came over and gave me a kiss before letting me know she would be back to pick me up in a couple hours. I ended up walking her out to her car and giving her another kiss before she left.

I walked back into the house and directly to my room because I knew that it was going to take at least an hour to pick out what to wear. It's not like I have to show a lot of skin considering the lack of clothing teasing that Sara and I have been doing to each other.

As much as I wanted to wear a dress, I decided instead on my black pin-striped pant suit, of course I left the top three buttons undone to show the right amount of cleavage. When I finally came back downstairs, I saw Mom and Lindsay were sitting on the couch, but before I got the chance to ask, Mom stopped me.

"Sorry for the surprise Catherine, but when Nancy told me you had a date with Sara, I just had to be the one to watch Lindsay and meet the woman who has both my daughters and granddaughter singing her praises," Mom explained as I just sat down beside Lindsay to await Sara's doom.

CHAPTER 9

When I looked over at the clock, I noticed that Sara is running a little late. Yeah, that is just what my mother needs, more ammo. Sara is so going to hear about being late for our first date. I could try and stick up for her, but that would just strengthen Mom's argument. When I saw lights come through the front window, I knew Sara was finally here. She ranged the doorbell, and I was about to get up, but Mom stopped me.

I saw Sara standing in the doorway holding alot of flowers. She handed Mom an arrangement of lilies, and then it dawned on me why she was late. Nancy must have given her the heads up on my mother's plan which led Sara to pick up Mom's favorite flowers. When she finally came in, she handed me roses, but not before taking one and handing it to Lindsay.

Lindsay ran directly upstairs carrying her flower while Mom handed me hers and told me to put them into water. I knew she wanted to speak with Sara alone, and I was about to stay, but Sara gave me a nod telling me she was okay. While I was in the kitchen, I tried to listen in, but Mom was speaking quiet enough that I couldn't hear.

As I was placing the flowers on the table, Sara came in and gave me a kiss. I took her hand and stood back looking over her choice in clothes. She was wearing tight dark blue dress pants with a deep purple blouse that seemed to be a size too small because it just melded to her body, and of course, she was also showing a tasteful amount of cleavage.

"Shall we go beautiful?" Sara asked interlocking her fingers with mine as we headed back into the living room. Lindsay was back downstairs and hug us both before we left. Sara walked me over to my side and opened the door for me. I had to smile knowing this night is going to be full of surprises.

The ride to the restaurant was spent listening to music on the CD player. From the songs I heard, I would have to guess Sara made this CD herself, and her choices told me she liked a range of musical genres which doesn't surprise me at all.

As we pulled into the restaurant, I realized that we were at the Italian place that you have to make reservations weeks in advance. Exactly how long has Sara been wanting to ask me out? Then, I had a really bad thought thinking these reservations weren't meant for me in the first place. Sara must have seen the look on my face because she stopped us outside the doors.

"Catherine, I have an idea I know what you are feeling. I was able to get us a table on short notice because I went to college with the owner. I would have told you sooner, but it would have ruined the surprise," Sara explained as I gave her a kiss.

When we walked in, Sara said something to the hostess before she headed into the kitchen. A couple seconds later, a very well dressed man came out and hugged Sara, and she made a quick introduction of her friend Timothy. He politely kissed my hand as he led us to our table. Sara whispered something to him while I was looking over the menu.

I knew what I wanted once I saw it. I ended up ordering the fettuccine alfredo with a side of cheesy garlic bread with Sara's approval, probably because she ordered pasta primavera in a garlic sauce. We both got garden salads as our appetizers, and I was about to ask Sara about what my mom said, but Tim came out with a bottle of wine. When I took my first sip, I found another surprise, Sara knows her wines. Oh yeah, I definitely want to find out more about Sara if she keeps surprising me like this.

While we waited for our food, Sara made me laugh by telling me about her run in with Nancy. Apparently since Nancy liked her, she thought it would be helpful to know that my mom was going to be waiting for her. I was still chuckling when the waiter came with our food.

We talked a little about work while we ate. Although, I did avoid two subjects one being Grissom's attitude and the other being when Sara was planning on coming back. I made her laugh at Greg's latest bribery attempt. She then offered me a taste of her dinner, and when I returned the favor, a bit of the sauce landed on her chin.

Before Sara got a chance to get it with her napkin, I wipe it off with my finger and offered it to Sara. I thought she would just lick it off, but when she sucked my finger into her mouth, I swear I melted into a puddle on the floor. While I was trying to get my bearings back, I heard something about dessert. I got a dessert for you, naked Sara topped with whipped cream.

"Catherine, would you like some dessert?" Sara asked as I noticed her naughty smile knowing my head was full of fun thoughts. I just ended up mumbling 'I'll have the same' even though I had no idea what Sara ordered. Thankfully, it was a delicious strawberry cheesecake.

After paying the check, we walked out holding hands as we waited for the valet to bring the car around. While we're standing there, I realize that I don't want this evening to end, but as much as Sara and I are enjoying teasing each other, this is only our first date. Then again, there is no harm in asking.

The ride home was the same as the trip to the restaurant, but this time I had my hand on Sara's leg. She seemed surprised when I first did it, but relaxed and left it there the rest of the way home. She walked be straight up to my door and gave me a goodnight kiss when I decided to take a chance.

"Night cap?"

CHAPTER 10

"Sure," was all Sara said as I opened the door and let her in. I took her hand and led her into the kitchen past Mom who was asleep on the couch. After handing her the wine and glasses, I pointed her towards the family room while I locked the front door. I took another peek at Mom before heading down the hall to join Sara.

I had to smile when I saw that Sara had already kicked off her shoes and was relaxing on the couch. I went around and lit the candles I had around the room and turned down the stereo before turning on the jazz station I listen to to relax.

Sara handed me a glass of wine as I sat down and slightly leaned against her. We were sitting there just listening to the music enjoying each other's company. As I finished my first glass of wine, I knew I wasn't going to be up much longer. I turned down Sara's offer for a refill, and she laid me down on the couch while she rearranged the sectional pieces of the couch.

"If it is okay with you, I want to hold you while you sleep," Sara said as she grabbed one of the end pillows and placed it under my head. I watched her as she blew out the candles and turned off the stereo before climbing onto the couch and covering us with a blanket.

"Sara, I don't know why, but I feel safe when I'm with you," I said giving her a tender kiss before laying my head on her shoulder. The last thing I remember before falling asleep was her running fingers through my hair.

--

When I woke up the next morning, the couch felt different. I opened my eyes to find that some time last night, I ended up laying on top of Sara. She must not have minded since her arms were wrapped around me. Since Sara was still sleeping, I decided to be her alarm clock. I started by kissing her down her neck, and I must have hit a ticklish spot because it made her giggle. We ended up sharing a passionate wake up kiss, but before it got serious, I heard someone clear their throat behind us.

"Mom, Nana wants to talk to you, and don't worry, I'll keep Sara company," Lindsay said as I gave Sara another kiss before heading to my lecture. I turned around to see what Linds was going to do, and I just smiled as Sara sat up on the couch before opening the blanket to let Lindsay sit with her.

I knew what I was going to hear ever before I found Mom sitting in the kitchen looking at her coffee cup. She was going to go on the whole bit of Sara staying over is going to confuse Lindsay. I think she needs to see what is going on in the family room before she starts throwing assumptions around.I knew I had to tell Mom some things before letting her have her say.

"Mom, I want to say my peace before giving you the floor. I know you don't think Sara should spend the night so early into our relationship, but I want you go to take look in the family room and tell me what you see before giving me your prepared lecture," I said giving Mom a hug and a kiss on the cheek before letting her go. I just hope they're still in the same position as I last saw.

I grabbed myself a mug and filled it with coffee awaiting Mom's return. I loved the feeling I woke up to this morning. I haven't felt that since I was a kid. Eddie may have given me Lindsay, but he never made me feel as safe and loved as Sara did this morning. I looked up and noticed Mom standing in the doorway with tears in her eyes.

"Catherine, I know Lindsay loved her dad, but I never saw the affection from him that Sara shows your little girl. I now understand what you see in that young woman, and I suggest you hang on to her because people like her don't come around all that often," Mom said wrapping me up in a hug.

Our hug was interupted by a knock at the door. We both wiped the tears out of our eyes as I went to see who it was. I really hope it isn't anybody from work since nobody but my family knows about me and Sara. I looked through the peephole and saw that it was Nancy. I opened the door to let her in, and when Mom saw who it was her, she went off.

"You, why did you have to tell Sara that I was here. She is a big girl who can handle herself. Just remember this my sweet daughter, I will get you back for this," Mom threatened before giving Nancy a hug.

"What can I say Mom, I like Sara. I'd rather her be aware of what she is walking in to. You would think you would done enough of this while we were growing up," Nancy countered before giving me a hug asking where Sara was.

After pointing her in the direction of the family room, I headed upstairs to take a shower. I just hope that work is better tonight than it has been, maybe my night off helped Grissom stop being such an ass. At least I know I'll be in the field since I finished all my paperwork before my day off.

I decided on pajamas after my shower. I figured it was too early to get ready for work, and it didn't make sense to get dressed and then change again for work. I went conservative on the pjs too since my mother, sister and daughter were downstairs. I can't exactly tart myself up while they are around.

CHAPTER 11

After leaving Lindsay with Mom and Nancy, I headed off to work. Sara left a little after dinner saying she would see me later. I thought I caught a look in her eye, but after her toe-curling kiss, I completely forgot about everything. I don't even think Grissom can screw up this good mood.

I pulled into the lab parking lot and headed for my office. When I made it to the breakroom, the boys were discussing the weekend's games. They were so into it that I barely got that nod that guys give each other. I just headed for the coffee pot to grab my first cup.

I turned around and almost dropped my mug on the floor, standing in front of me was the smiling face of the woman who held me last night while I slept. I put my cup on the counter and wrapped Sara up into a bone crushing hug. I whispered in her ear that I would love to give her a kiss, but with present company, it would have to wait.

After grabbing herself a cup, she sat beside me on the couch. She was close enough that I knew, but far enough that the guys wouldn't think anything of it. We were all brought out of our discussions when Greg came running in. He had that stupid silly grin on his face as he came over and gave Sara a hug.

"I hate to break up the festivities, but we have some work to do. Warrick, Nick, you guys have a body dump in the desert, I'll meet you there. Catherine, Sara, you have a body with suspicious circs at a residence, Brass is meeting you there," Grissom explained as I finished my coffee before innocently offering my hand.

Greg was the only one who saw it, but Sara took it as I helped her up. He just shrugged as he headed back to his lab. I lipped Sara a sorry as we headed out. The beginning of the ride to the scene was quiet, mainly because I am still getting over the surprise of Sara's return.

"Catherine, I would have told you that I was coming back tonight, but after seeing the look on your face when you turned around, it made it all worth not telling you," Sara said squeezing my hand. I leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek just as we were arriving at the scene.

As we headed over to Brass, he had the proud daddy smile on his face. I was always glad he looked after Sara. I don't know that much about Ellie, but I think he sees Sara as his second chance and doesn't want her to get lost like she did. I saw Sara getting antsy while Brass was going over the particulars, and it took all my professionalism not to burst into laughter watching Sara act like Lindsay on Christmas morning.

When we finally got inside, David was giving us the details of the body before he took her. There wasn't that much blood around the body except near the wound on her head. The rest of the large foyer looked untouched. I took a peek at Sara who seemed to have this scared look on her face. I want to ask, but I'll wait until we get back to the lab.

"So first day back girl, upstairs or down?" I asked as she gave me her famous Sara smirk along with a nod upstairs. I had to chuckle, mainly because I was half expecting to get the finger for teasing her. I decided to start in the kitchen since one, it was the furthest from the body, and two, I might as well clear the scene room by room.

The kitchen was pristene. The best I could tell is that it was cleaned after dinner which fits into the woman's time of death, but I found some things that are going to make this case worse. From the looks of the dishes, it looks like the woman has a husband and young child.

From the looks of the next two rooms, nothing happened down here except that it is the floor the body was found on. I just hope Sara is having better luck upstairs than I am down here. Even the room just off the crime scene is coming up clean.

I started with the front door which didn't show ant signs of forced entry. I printed the door and came up with a couple lifts. I checked the windows inside and out, but didn't find any prints. I started not liking where this was leading. After finishing the rest of the foyer, I went to start on the staircase.

I hit paydirt on the handrail. There were prints galore, but then I came across my favorite. It was a print that was made in a smear of blood which meant our assailant stuck his thumbprint in the victim's blood. Other than prints and blood, I wasn't finding much else.

I decided to drop the evidence from downstairs in the SUV before joining Sara upstairs. I had Brass wait inside while I made my trip to the Denali. I know Grissom waits until he is done before loading up, but I'd rather put away the evidence from one place before moving to the next.

After locking up the Denali, I headed back inside. I figure Sara and I can do a perimeter walkthrough before we leave. I found Brass standing at the bottom of the steps listening up to make sure everything sounds okay. That was until we both heard Sara's panicked scream.

"Catherine!"

CHAPTER 12

I was already up the stairs by the time Brass told me to wait. Screw that, I had my gun out by the time I made it to the top of the stairs. I saw the light from Sara's flashlight as I crept down the hall. I didn't hear anything else from Sara which wasn't helping my heart rate. I clicked my safety off when I reached the doorway.

"Freeze!" Brass yelled as I let him catch up before entering the room. Jim and I both put our guns away when we saw what made Sara scream. There was a little girl, who looked no older than five, attached to Sara's legs.

"Sara, are you okay?" I asked looking at the startled face of my girlfriend. She gave me a weak smile as she nodded.

"Yeah, it's just that this little girl scared me when I opened the closet door," Sara explained as I crouched down to try and get the little girl's attention. When she saw that I was at her level, she let go of Sara's legs and wrapped her arms around my neck.

I left Brass with Sara while I took the little girl to the Denali. I know she has touched both Sara and I, but she may know something about what happened to her mom. It wasn't that long ago that I was telling Lindsay that her dad was dead, and now, I have to tell this girl that her mom is dead. I sat her in the front seat facing me to see if she could answer any of my questions.

"Hi sweetie, my name is Catherine. Do you know who hurt your mommy?" I asked seeing as though she was in the house when her mom died. The only problem is that I have a good idea who did it, but without proof, that's all it is, an idea.

"Daddy," was all she said as I turned away and bit my lip to fight back tears. I knew the little girl was going to have be processed because more than likely, she was being abused too. I let the little girl hold my hand while waited for Sara and Brass to come out.

By the time they came out, I found out her name is Sydney. I knew either Sara or I would have to go with her to the hospital, but I wanted to wait for Sara before deciding. Normally, I would have gone ahead and done it, but with Sara's dedication when it involves abuse, I'd rather ask then assume, plus I needed to tell Brass about the father. I let Sydney know that I needed to talk to my friends, but I would stay in eyeshot.

"Okay guys, we have two problems. First, Brass, you need to put out an APB on the father because when I asked Sydney who hurt her mom, all she said was daddy. Second, I think Sara or I should take her to the hospital to get her check out," I explained as Sara asked him to take them while I headed back to the lab. As I passed Sara, I gave her hand a squeeze.

When I climbed in the SUV, I called home just to check in, and Mom always knew when I did it was because the case involved kids. I let her go as she told me that Linds was fine and sleeping. I ended up driving to the lab with the radio on to keep the thoughts in my head to a minimum.

After making a couple trips, I had all the evidence in Sara's favorite lab. The first thing I grabbed were the print lifts. I wanted Jacqui to run my bloody thumbprint first just in case the girl was wrong about what she was saying.

I ran DNA to Greg, and the trace to Hodges before I headed to Doc Robbins. If he says blunt force trauma, I won't be surprised. Normally, I would have updated Gil by now, but time is of the essense. It's liable to land me into trouble, but since I'm already there, it doesn't really matter.

Jacqui beeped me while Al was giving me the information I already knew. I hauled ass up to her lab, so I could have Brass pick up our suspect. I slowed down as I got closer, but was deterred as Greg knocked on his window.

"Catherine, the blood from the railing matches that of your victim, but one of Sara's swabs came up the husband," he explained handing me his findings which combined with what Jacqui is probably going to tell me, little Sydney is going to be an orphan as I felt a headache coming on as I walked into Jacqui's lab.

"Let me guess, the bloody thumbprint matches the victim's husband, right?" I asked as Jacqui nodded showing me her computer screen. I dialed Brass with the new updates as I headed to my office to nip this headache in the bud.

I opened the door to find Sara on the couch with her face in her hands. Well shit, this day just keeps getting better and better. I grabbed a couple aspirin and swallowed them with the water on my desk as I grabbed a chair and pulled it in front of Sara.

"Catherine, there are some things we need to talk about, but not here. I would like to come home with you after shift, and the things I tell you might have some bearing on whether you want to continue this or not," Sara said as she got up and left my office.

CHAPTER 13

I finally made my way back to the layout room. Sara wasn't in there, but her photos of Sydney from the hospital are sitting there. As I went through them, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. She had various stages of bruising, and her x-rays showed healed fractures from various times.

I can't fathom the hell this little girl has been through in her short life. As I was going through the rest of our evidence, the father is looking better and better for this and still hasn't turned up, so they have Sydney in protective custody. I have half a mind to take her home with me and just have Brass place a car outside the house.

I haven't seen Sara since she left my office. I have seen her take cases hard, but this one seems to affecting her more. Getting ready to leave, I checked my office for her, but she wasn't there, so I headed to the locker room to see if she was waiting there. I walked in and found her with her head resting on her locker door.

"Come on Sara, lets go home," I said putting my hand on her shoulder. She look up at me and what I saw scared me a little. The only look I've seen that comes close to this one was the one I saw after Eddie's case. She took my hand as we walked out of the lab together holding hands. A few people saw us, but didn't say anything.

On the ride home, I turned on my favorite jazz station hoping it helps Sara relax a little. I do know that Lindsay is going to be thrilled to see Sara again, but I'm not sure how Sara is going to be considering last night. As I pulled into the driveway, Sara seemed to perk up a little.

Lindsay must have been watching through the curtains because when Sara got out, Lindsay came running out yelling Sara's name. Sara bent down so Lindsay could give her a hug. Sara then picked her and brought her over. Lindsay gave me a kiss on the cheek when she was close enough as we headed into the house. I went ahead of them to make sure Mom doesn't bother Sara too much.

During breakfast, Lindsay gave us the lowdown of everything she did after I left. When she brought up Sara's first day back, I just told her that we got to work together. After we finished, Lindsay ran upstairs to get her bag while Sara and I took care of the dishes.

"Sara, go ahead and take a shower while I run Linds to school. Then, if you're still up when I get back we can talk," I said giving her a tender kiss on the lips as Lindsay came running in and hugged Sara again while I decided to walk Mom out.

I knew Mom was pretty much holding something in all through breakfast. Ever since Eddie, she has kept an eye on me the way she did when I was a teenager, and it doesn't matter if she likes the person or not. If it were anyone but Sara, I wouldn't care about her overprotectiveness.

"Mom, whatever it is that is bothering you, let it go. Sara isn't like any other person I've dated, so if you're not comfortable with the time we are spending together maybe you shouldn't watch Lindsay for a few days," I said as Mom just nodded as Lindsay came out.

---

As I pulled into the driveway for the second time, I was a little scared. I have no clue as to what Sara is going to tell me. I walked in the front door and checked the downstairs to see if she came down after her shower. I locked the front door and shut off the lights as I headed up the stairs.

I saw that my bedroom door was open, and when I looked inside, Sara was asleep on top of the covers. I grabbed some sleep clothes before heading to the bathroom for a quick shower. I came back in the room, and I had barely climbed on the bed when Sara's eyes popped open.

"Catherine, the easiest way to tell you this is that Sydney is me," Sara started before going into the horrors of growing up with the physical and mental abuse that she went through starting from the age of five until her mother killed her father when she was thirteen.

There weren't words that I could say through my own tears as I just pulled Sara into me letting her cry. Eddie may have hit me a couple times, but he never raised his hand to Lindsay, and I can't see how someone can do that to their own flesh and blood. After hearing Sara's story, the way she reacts to certain cases makes perfect sense now.

I don't know when either one of us fell asleep, but when the alarm went off, I turned it off and found myself otherwise pinned down to the bed. She must have been holding that for awhile because she didn't even twitch when the alarm went off. I carefully untangled myself from Sara before writing her a quick note before leaving to pick up Lindsay.

As I'm driving, I am hoping Sara believes what I wrote in that note. Now more than ever, I want to be with Sara, so I can show her what a family is supposed to be. Although, I don't know how I am going to explain to Lindsay that Sara is still at the house.

CHAPTER 14

As I pulled up to the school, I notice some parents of Lindsay's friends. I really hope they don't want to talk because I'm still trying to process everything Sara told me this morning. I was standing outside the car when Lindsay came running out.

I crouched down, so I can get a hug from my little girl. She wraps her arms around my neck as I flashback to last night with Sydney. I got Lindsay all buckled in, and she went through everything that happened at school on the way home which gives me more time to figure out how to explain Sara being at the house.

I pulled into the driveway while Lindsay was explaining that she was going to need Sara's help on the new math stuff they were learning. When we walked inside, I noticed that Sara wasn't downstairs yet. Hopefully, she is still asleep upstairs.

"Linds, why don't you grab an apple and get started on your homework," I said as she pouted, but did what I asked. I slowly made my way up the stairs and didn't hear any movement up here either as I took a deep breath and slowly opened the door.

I smiled when I saw Sara had taken over my bed. She was lying on her stomach with her arms and legs stretched to the four corners. As I got closer, I noticed my note was gripped in her right hand. I quietly made my way out and headed back downstairs to tell Lindsay about Sara.

"Lindsay, I need to tell you that Sara is sleeping upstairs. We caught a case last night that affected her, and I asked her to come home with me. So if she seems a little different, I don't want you to ask why, okay?" I said kissing Lindsay head as she nodded and went back to her homework.

I went to the kitchen and started a batch of coffee when I realized I needed to figure out what to cook for dinner with Sara now joining us. I looked in the pantry, and thankfully, I had some pasta and knew that I had salad fixings. I grabbed a cup of coffee after it finished brewing and went into the living room to read the paper.

About a half hour later, Lindsay came over to let me look over her homework. I gave her another kiss as she headed upstairs to get changed and put her bag away. I went back to the paper as I stretched out on the couch. When I finished my coffee, I noticed that Lindsay hadn't come back down yet, and I was worried that she might be bothering Sara.

I pour myself a second cup and one for Sara in case she is up. When I reached the top of the steps, I heard Lindsay's distinctive laughter coming from her room. I peeked into her room and found that Sara was tickling her, but when Sara smelled the coffee, she looked over at me and smiled. I guess she trusts that I was telling her the truth in the note.

She came over and gave me a kiss as she took us over to my bedroom. She closed the door behind us as she sat me down on the bed. She started pacing like she was trying to figure out what she wanted to say. I hope she knows that she can tell me anything.

"Catherine, the things I told you this morning has caused a few of my relationships to break up. The fact that you are sticking by me means the world to me. The other reasons for the rest of my relationships not working is me. I've been known to torpedo them on purpose because I didn't think I deserved to be loved," Sara explained as I climbed off the bed and wrapped her up in a hug.

"Sara, I don't know if you know this, but I can be a bit of a bitch. I tend to get what I want most of the time, and I want you in mine and Lindsay's life. When Eddie died and Lindsay was starting to act out, you Sara Sidle gave me my daughter back," I said giving Sara a kiss and laying us down in bed.

We just laid there playing with each other's fingers while Sara was telling why she was tickling Lindsay. She was apparently trying to tickle Sara while she explained the math stuff, but Sara ended up turning the tables on her.

We were broken out of our giddiness by a knock on the door. I told Linds to come in, and she smiled at the scene she found. I patted the bed in front of us, but she shooked her head. Instead, she gestured with her finger for us to follow her.

Sara and I walked downstairs holding hands while Lindsay was still not saying anything. When we walked into the dining room, I noticed that the table was set. I looked at Sara and then Lindsay who had the biggest smile on her face.

"Mom, Sara and I wanted to do something special for you, so we cooked dinner, but since I can't cook yet, Sara sprang for pizza," Lindsay explained as she went into the kitchen as Sara pulled out my chair. Sara had just sat down when Lindsay came in carrying two pizza boxes.

CHAPTER 15

After dropping Lindsay off at my sister's house, Sara and I headed over to her place so she could get changed for work. We ended up stopping at Sara's favorite coffee shop for a couple of mochas. We both figured why start the night drinking the regular stuff and just wait until Greg brews the good stuff.

Without even thinking about it, Sara and I walked into the lab holding hands. It wasn't until Gil saw us and told us to wait in his office while he gave the guys their assignment. Sara had a worried look on her face until I gave her a kiss on the lips telling her it was going to be okay.

Gil came back in and sat behind his desk trying to pull off the tough act. I'm sorry, but I know Sara has seen scary, and the creeps I had to put up dancing were twice as bad as Grissom is trying to pull off.

"So, do either of you want to tell me what is going on?" he asked sternly looking mainly at Sara.

"The way I see it Gil, whatever is going on is none of your business. All you saw was two female co-workers holding hands, but yes, Sara and I have been spending some time together outside work," I said smiling.

"You say some time, but I have it on good authority that in the last two weeks, one of you has spent the night at the other's place. So, that tells me that there is more than a friendship going on," Gil stated as I was about to explode after hearing Grissom has been literally stalking us, but Sara stood up and leaned over Grissom's desk getting in his face.

"I know you remember what I told you about being too late, and you are. I suggest you get over whatever problem you are having because if you don't I know quite a few people in different organizations that would love to hear about you," Sara said grabbing my hand as we left Gil's office.

We were heading towards my office when my pager went off. I showed Sara that our suspect was down at PD which gives us both time to cool off after our confrontation with Grissom. As I'm driving, I realize that that I'm not real comfortable with Sara being in the room with our suspected abuser shortly after going off, and I'd rather not pick a fight by telling her to stay in the observation room, but I know I have to. When I pulled into the parking lot, I took hold of Sara's hands as I shifted to face her.

"Sara, I know how much you want to nail this bastard, but I'm not comfortable with having you in the interogation room. I'm aware that I am risking what we have, but considering what happened back at the lab, I'm only looking out for you," I said closing my eyes and taking a deep breath before opening them again.

What I found surprised me, Sara was staring at me with a smile on her face. She brought her hand to my cheek as she leaned over and gave me a quick kiss before heading inside. We both headed to Brass' office to let him know we are here.

I gave Sara's hand one last squeeze before we went to separate rooms. When I first saw Sydney's dad, I was taken by surprise, but then I realized he isn't much bigger than Eddie was. Brass first informed of him what he was being charged of and asked if he had anything to say.

While Jim and I listened to him describe what happened that night, I realized that Sara is hearing this, and I got up while he was going through it. I walked into the observation room and found Sara on the floor crying.

I locked the door and shut off the speaker before sitting on the floor and pulling Sara into my arms letting her cry. I don't know how much more of this she can handle as I texted Brass telling that Sara and I were in the locked room.

"Cath, I can't do this anymore. As much as I love the job, and the people I work with, cases like this take me back to a place I'm trying to get away from, and it hurts too much," Sara said as I whispered in her ear that I would stand behind whatever decision she makes.

We didn't talk at all on the way back to the lab. I'm not really surprised considering Sara is going to tell the team she is resigning. I don't know how Gil is going to take the news, but he's not the one I'm worried about. We both headed to my office, so I could write up the case file.

After I finished, Sara and I headed to Gil's office, but for different reasons. I handed him the file, and he quickly skimmed through before giving us congratulations. Sara handed him her paper as I put my hand on her back just in case. He just nodded as he placed it on his desk. After they hugged, we went to the breakroom hoping the guys were all in there. Sara grabbed my hand as the guys turned around facing us.

"Guys, I need to tell you that I am resigning. I'll be working the next two weeks, so you might want to get started on the party planning. I also want to tell you guys that you are my brothers. I know things started out rough, but I grew to love you as my family, and it isn't like you won't be seeing me because I'll be dropping by on occasion to see my girlfriend," Sara said pulling me into a kiss as I heard Greg yell 'holy shit'.

CHAPTER 16

I can't believe how much has changed in a year. I would never have been expecting to be moving into a new house with my wife and two daughters. Yes two, Sydney has been great for both Sara and Lindsay. With Sara, it gives her the chance to give Sydney the life Sara wanted growing up, and it gives Lindsay the little sister she has always wanted.

Although, it gives me a chance to make up for the mistakes I made with Lindsay, and knowing I have Sara here to help me. Gil actually came around and pulled some strings to get Sara a professorship at UNLV. Do you remember Sara telling the guys that she was only staying the two weeks to help train the new hire? Wrong, she stayed another month.

Personally, I think it was the fact that Jen kind of looked like me. I knew Sara would never cheat, but that didn't stop her from teasing me a few times which of course was paid back when we got home, and there were a couple times I had her walking funny.

Even though she has started teaching, Gil calls her in on a few cases here and there as a consultant. I think it is mutually beneficial. She gets to be a CSI, and he gets to watch his protege in her natural habitat. We even had a fight over Gil once, but it wasn't what you think.

See when we decided to get married, she and I both wanted him to walk us down the aisle, and it wasn't until Brass told Sara that it was a father's duty to give his daughter away. I swear seeing Sara crying after what he said made Jim cry, but I have never been able to prove it.

The ceremony was magical. The guys were upset that they were just ushers, but we wanted simple bridal parties, so Lindsay stood by me while Sydney was beside Sara. I was glad that I read my vows first because I don't know if I would have been able to get through them after Sara made me cry with hers.

The recetion was a different story. Even though it is supposed to be about Sara and I's union, Lindsay and Sydney decided to take it over and become the life of the party. Sara and I got our moments with the first dance and the cake, but otherwise, it was the Linds and Syd show, and Sara and I both loved it.

Our living conditions were interesting while we looked for our house. We split times between her place and mine, it all depended on our schedules. The kids could have cared less since they had their own room in both houses anyway, and it felt like home in either place, but Sara and I both wanted something that was ours.

Then out of nowhere, we found it, and it was perfect. The master bedroom was huge, and the other three bedrooms were fairly big too. When I first saw the fourth bedroom, I didn't know what we were going to do with it until Sara gave me that look with her wagging eyebrows. I swear that is all that woman thinks about these days.

From cops to CSIs, we had loads of help when we moved, and Sara and I found out there is a new romance in the lab. Jen has hooked up with the blonde firecracker that fills in for Greg, but for the life of me, I can't remember her name. Although there for a while, I thought Sara was going to kick her ass for her constant flirting with me. I was broken out of my thoughts by Lindsay yelling.

"Come on Mom, Sara said I could drive to the zoo if you don't hurry up," she screamed up the stairs as I grabbed one of Sara's sleeveless tees to wear for our family outing. I just hope Sydney's first zoo trip is better than Lindsay's.

Lindsay took Sydney's hand, and they went out to the car as I came down the steps. I walked up to Sara and gave her a kiss, but not before smacking her ass and whispering there would be payback for hurrying me.

The zoo was a blast, and I don't think Sydney walked at all. She either got piggybacked by Sara or Lindsay, but Sara made me feel better by telling me that she would carry me into the house when we got back home.

During dinner, I noticed Lindsay kept giving me a look, but I didn't know what for until she got up and went to the bathroom. I whispered to Sara that Linds needed to talk to me. I gave her and Sydney a kiss before following Lindsay.

"Mom, can I call Aunt Nancy and see if it is okay if Syd and I sleepover. I think it is for the best considering the looks you and Sara are giving each other," Lindsay said as I nodded as she called my sister and then embarassed me by saying that Sara and I were going to have some sort of sex olympics and didn't think they should be around to hear it.

When we got back to the table, I almost made Sara choke when I told her what Lindsay said. The rest of dinner was uneventful, and when we dropped the girls off, I started teasing Sara on the drive home. I knew what it was starting, and I didn't care. Once we got in the house, I locked the door and turned around. Sara walked up to me and tossed me over her shoulder and carried me up to our room occasionally smacking my ass. Oh yeah, 'let the games begin'.
